Allergen and Anaphylaxis Management
Updated for 2026 to reflect Benedict's Law and the new
statutory allergy requirements for schools.
Our Allergen and Anaphylaxis Management for Schools course gives every member of school staff the knowledge they need to keep pupils with allergies safe. On average, around two children in every classroom are affected by allergies. About 30% of severe reactions happen in children who have never been diagnosed, so allergy awareness really does matter for everyone, not just the school nurse.
In around 20 to 30 minutes, this online course covers the 14 major food allergens, how to spot and respond to an allergic emergency, how to use adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) safely, and what the law now expects of your school under Benedict's Law.

Allergen and Anaphylaxis Management Course Content
This course gives school staff a practical understanding of allergens and how to manage them safely in school. By the end of the course, you will:
- Understand what food allergies are and how they differ from food intolerances
- Recognise allergy risks and the signs of an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis
- Know how to respond appropriately to an allergic emergency
- Understand how to use adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) safely
- Understand your responsibilities in supporting pupils with allergies
- Be able to help create a safe and allergy-aware school environment
This first module sets out what you will learn and how to get the most from the course. It introduces the learning outcomes, explains how to move through the course and save your progress, and covers the accessibility features available as you work through each lesson.
Here we look at why allergy awareness is so important in schools, and introduce Benedict's Law and what it asks of schools. You will learn the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance, how allergic reactions develop, and how to identify the 14 major food allergens, as well as what can happen when allergies are not managed properly.
Anaphylaxis can come on very quickly, and a calm, confident response from staff saves lives. This module helps you recognise the ABC symptoms of anaphylaxis, walks step by step through responding to a suspected reaction (including giving an adrenaline auto-injector and calling 999), and shows how different AAIs, such as EpiPen and Jext, are used safely.
Allergy safety is a shared responsibility and part of safeguarding and health and safety. This module explains the purpose of a school allergy policy, the role of the Allergy Lead, and how Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) support pupils with allergies day to day and in an emergency.
You will put everything you have learned into practice with a short assessment based on realistic school scenarios. The pass mark is 80%, and if you do not pass first time you can retake the assessment as many times as you need.
Includes a downloadable '14 allergens' poster and further resources you can use and display around your school.

"As a teacher who is very concerned about the welfare of children, this course has enlightened me and broadened my understanding of what to do if ever there was any form of abuse, be it among children themselves or members of staff."
Tobias Chiwereza, T for Teachers
"This was a very clear course, with well laid-out sections enabling the user to pause and come back at any point. The end of section quizzes help cement the knowledge acquired in each section."

Allergen and Anaphylaxis Management FAQ
Yes. Benedict's Law asks schools to provide whole-staff allergy training, and this course is written to cover those requirements. That includes recognising anaphylaxis, using spare adrenaline auto-injectors, and understanding your school's allergy policy and Individual Healthcare Plans.
It is designed for all school staff, including teachers, teaching assistants, catering and lunchtime staff, admin, first aiders and after-school club staff. Anyone who spends time around pupils benefits from knowing how to prevent and respond to an allergic reaction.
No. Adrenaline auto-injectors such as EpiPen and Jext are designed to be used by people without medical training. This course shows you how to use them safely and confidently in an emergency.
The course takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Once you pass the final assessment (80% pass mark), your certificate is emailed to you automatically as evidence of completion.
