How Often Should DSL Training be Updated?

DSL training is not a legal qualification but is strongly recommended and expected for staff who hold safeguarding lead responsibilities in organisations working with children.

DSL training should normally be refreshed every two years. However, safeguarding leads should update their knowledge regularly and keep up to date with changes to safeguarding legislation and guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).

Please note that if you need to cancel your training for any reason, we require 14 working days' notice.

If a cancellation is requested after this point, we may be able to transfer your booking to another date where possible.

We will always work with you to ensure you can attend; however, places are limited.

Once your place is confirmed, you will receive a booking confirmation email.

You will also be given access to our Learning Management System (LMS) where you can complete the self-paced eLearning training course modules.

Since the implementation of Safeguarding Partnerships, many sectors have moved away from using the term “levels”. Instead, organisations are expected to complete safeguarding training that is appropriate to the responsibilities of their role.

This course is designed for individuals who hold, or are preparing to take on, a Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy DSL role.

Individuals who are part of a Designated Safeguarding team are expected to undertake role-specific safeguarding training and update this at least every two years, alongside regular safeguarding updates and safeguarding awareness training.

You will be expected to complete the our self-led eLearning courses first. This includes our online intro and advanced safeguarding training courses.

You will also need to attend the live online training via video link and this includes trainer-led teaching, discussion and scenario-based learning.

Once you book your training, we will set you up on our Learning Management System (LMS) and send you a username and password so you can access the platform. From there, you will be able to begin the Introduction to Safeguarding and Advanced Safeguarding eLearning courses before your live training session with us.

Our online courses are designed to be flexible and self-paced. You can start, pause and resume the training at any time, allowing you to complete the course at a time that suits you. When you log back in, the system will automatically save your progress, so you can continue exactly where you left off without needing to revisit completed sections.

At the end of your online training, you will receive a certificate valid for two years.

You will also retain full access to the course content, resources, links, and downloads for the duration of your certificate’s validity.

Leaners will need:

  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer, laptop or tablet
  • Access to the video link provided before the session

A microphone and camera are recommended to support participation.

Learners will receive a PDF certificate of completion once they have completed their 2 online self-led training courses and another one when they have participated in the online live training course.

Training provides the knowledge, guidance and confidence required to perform the DSL role, but competency develops through workplace experience, ongoing safeguarding updates and organisational practice.

You can book as many delegates as required. However, if you have more than five participants, it may be more cost-effective to arrange an onsite session with one of our trainers, where they deliver training at your organisation

If you cannot find a suitable date, please contact us and we will do our best to arrange an alternative session or discuss other training options.
