FAQs

Schools often require a range of safeguarding services to ensure their safeguarding arrangements are effective and compliant with statutory guidance. These may include safeguarding audits, safeguarding reviews, consultancy support, DSL mentoring, safeguarding supervision and safeguarding training.

These services help schools strengthen safeguarding systems, support safeguarding leaders and prepare for an inspection.

A safeguarding audit is an independent review of a school’s safeguarding arrangements. It assesses whether safeguarding policies, procedures, training and record keeping meet statutory requirements and inspection standards. Following the audit, schools receive a report and action plan with recommendations to strengthen safeguarding practice.

A safeguarding review provides an external evaluation of safeguarding practice across the school. Schools often request a review when preparing for an Ofsted inspection, when there has been a change in safeguarding leadership or when they want independent assurance that safeguarding systems are effective.

Safeguarding supervision provides professional support for safeguarding leads and safeguarding teams. It creates a safe space to reflect on safeguarding cases, discuss challenges and strengthen safeguarding decision-making. Supervision is widely recognised as an important part of safeguarding practice and helps support staff wellbeing.

A safeguarding consultant provides expert advice and guidance to schools on safeguarding policies, procedures and safeguarding systems. Consultants may support schools with safeguarding audits, Ofsted preparation, safeguarding investigations, safeguarding culture development and safeguarding leadership support.

Safeguarding consultancy is useful for headteachers, Designated Safeguarding Leads, governors and safeguarding teams. Schools may seek consultancy when reviewing safeguarding systems, responding to safeguarding concerns or preparing for an inspection.

Safeguarding services help schools ensure safeguarding systems meet inspection expectations. This may include reviewing safeguarding policies, record keeping, safeguarding culture and staff safeguarding knowledge. Independent safeguarding audits or reviews can help schools identify areas for improvement before an inspection.

Safeguarding arrangements should be reviewed regularly to ensure they remain compliant with statutory guidance and reflect current best practice. Many schools undertake an annual safeguarding audit or health check to review safeguarding systems and identify areas for improvement.
