During 2013/14, the NSPCC received 17,089 calls from people reporting signs of child abuse. This figure shows a 28% rise on the figure of 13,389 from the 2012/13 period.
The main reason for people to contact the NSPCC was to make calls regarding neglect and it accounted for 31% of the overall contact made. The NSPCC referred to police and children’s service a total of 24,041 cases of neglect during 2013/14. Again, this was a rise on the 2012/13 figure of 18,345.
The head of the NSPCC helpline John Cameron, has stated that ‘the earlier neglect is caught the easier it is to stop’. He also praised the people using the helpline.
