In a survey which is to be published in Community Care magazine, nearly 60% of social care professionals questioned said that they believe it either quite or very unlikely that social services would be able to take swift action in order to protect children who are being neglected. This figure rose to 72% when dealing with children suffering from emotional abuse. The survey was carried out by NSPCC and Community Care.

Three-fifths of those questioned also felt that there was pressure on them to downgrade cases of neglect in their area to ‘children in need’ rather than ‘children in need of protection’.
