According to Daphne Koller, the co-founder of US online university Coursera, leading universities will be offering accredited online undergraduate degrees within 5 years.
The technology is already available but universities are possibly hesitant to offer these online courses as they are concerned about their reputations if they were to do so. Many universities are already offering short courses online.
Whether fully online undergraduate courses would exist remains to be seen. They may be mainly online with some residential components.
Online learning could be the solution for students who want to improve their knowledge and qualifications yet cannot afford either the time or money to attend a bricks and mortar university course. Massive, open, online courses (MOOCs) could well make education more accessible and affordable to many more people.
