Following the abuse scandal in Rochdale, where nine men were jailed for grooming girls, the local council has announced steps to improve child safety. As some of the men convicted were taxi drivers Rochdale council has said that anyone applying for a private hire licence will have to pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (formally CRB) check.

Other developments to prevent the grooming scandal occurring again include:

  • An increase in the resources allocated to the dedicated ‘Sunrise Team’.
  • Extensive staff training
  • Improvements to the referral process
  • Stronger joint working with partners, including Greater Manchester Police.
