What is a child protection register?

A child protection register is a list containing confidential details of children who are at continuing risk of physical, emotional or sexual abuse or neglect, and for whom there is a child protection plan. They cover each local authority area in the UK and are managed by individual social services departments. In England a child protection register is no longer held but information is collected on children who are the subject of a child protection plan.

Child protection plans or child protection registrations are not a measure of the incidence of maltreatment but do give some indication of the scale of the problem by providing figures for the number of children who are judged to be at risk of significant harm.
