Below is a listing of the legislation introduced for the protection of children and vulnerable adults.

1885: The Criminal Law Amendment Act is introduced which raised the age of consent from 13 to 16/

1933: The Children and Young Persons Act is introduced which, amongst other things, made it illegal to allow children under 16 into a brothel.

1953: The Children and Young Persons Act is introduced which outlined the laws surrounding child performers and chaperones.

1978: The Protection of Children Act is introduced which made it an offence to make, distribute or possess indecedent images of children.

1989: The Children Act is introduced which brought in the legal concept of parental responsibility as well as defined the role and responsibility of local authorities and courts. This Act went on to form the basis of the current child protection system.

2002: Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks are introduced for the first time.

2003: The Sexual Offences Act is introduced which increased the penalties relating to the abuse of children.
