Human rights ruling for offenders

The Supreme Court has ruled that it is a breach of human rights for offenders to be placed on the SOR for life without any review. Such a ruling will mean that offenders will be able to appeal against the requirements and may be removed from the register instead of having to wait 15 years after being released from prison before they can apply to be removed. The government has expressed its concern and has announced that “minimum possible changes will be made to the law”.

NSPCC, the children’s charity, has said that it is a “concerning day for our justice system”.
