A former Canon of Carlisle Cathedral, Ronald Johns, has today been jailed for four years, convicted of a series of offences against children between 1983 and 1991.

It was noted that one of the youngsters involved made an official complaint to the church back in 1993, at which time Johns was a canon at Carlisle. At that time, the church took the decision to demote Johns and move him out of Carlisle. That matter didn’t come to the attention of the police until 2012.

The church has today apologised to those who were affected by Johns, admitting that they should have taken the matter to the police in 1993, something which they would automatically do today.
